YCCC Online Psychology Course Proves Both Positive and Popular

Wells - Joining the wave of educational institutions across America, York County Community College became the first school in Maine to add Positive Psychology, a new area of the social science discipline, to its spring 2009 curriculum. The online course, which opened for registration on November 3rd, was filled within hours.  A second session of the course was immediately added to accommodate additional students who were unable to enroll in the course.

Positive Psychology is the scientific study of the strengths and virtues that enable individuals and communities to thrive.  This field is founded on the belief that people want to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate what is best within themselves, and to enhance their experiences of love, work, and play.  Dr. Cindy Lahar, Department Chair of Biological and Social Sciences, brought the course to YCCC.

“It was time for Maine to embrace this new area of psychology.  We are excited to be the first to bring the course to Maine, and by seeing the enrollment soar on the first day of registration, we can see that Maine is ready for this new area of Psychology," Lahar said.

York County Community College, established in 1994, is one of seven community colleges in the Maine Community College System.  The college enrolls approximately 1,100 students in associate degrees and transfer programs and over 1,600 individuals in non-credit continuing education and professional development areas.
